Step inside The Maker, a stunning historic hotel inspired by creatives

A mere two-hour drive from the bustle of New York City lies the charming town of Hudson, New York. Known by locals as “upstate’s downtown,” Hudson is full of vintage furniture shops, cafes, and art galleries—making it the perfect destination for a culturally rich, yet relaxing weekend escape. For those seeking somewhere to stay when exploring all Hudson has to offer, look no further than The Maker: a stunning hotel inspired by the creatives that call Hudson Valley home.
Centrally located on Warren Street, The Maker’s deep mahogany doors open to what feels like a historic home. And indeed, the hotel is spread across three beautifully restored, freshly fused buildings: a Georgian mansion and carriage house from the 1890s, and a Greek Revival building from the 1840s. The space is dimly lit by vintage Art Deco lamps and shimmering chandeliers, lending the library a rich, romantic feel.
Glancing around, you’ll notice antique furniture that spans Belle Epoque to Victorian eras and an art collection that pulls from creators from around the world. You’re going to want to grab a coffee table book and curl up on the tufted leather sofa—the library was curated by none other than The Strand, so you’re sure to find something worth a read. A server from the adjoining cafe may pass by and offer you tea, which will only be appropriate as you read by the crackling fire.
The Maker opened in 2020, a collaboration between hospitality guru Damien Janowicz and co-founders of the global beauty and fragrance brand Fresh, Lev Glazman and Alina Roytberg. Up the ornately carved central staircase, you’ll find a tiny nook with a velvet loveseat and glass cabinet thoughtfully stocked with half-full fragrances from around the world. Spritz one on and try it out for the day (or night)—and know that the line-up of scents on top were crafted by the hotel and are available for purchase.
Eleven rooms are spread across the hotel’s three buildings, but we’d suggest snagging one of the four Maker Studios in the main mansion. Each was inspired by a different creative archetype, complete with living areas, fireplaces, and breathtaking detailing.
The Artist
The Artist is a bohemian refuge inspired by integrating a work and living space. With rich textures, walls full of framed artwork spanning oil paintings to pastel sketches, and an actual easel set up by the bed, it’s easy to get lost in fantasy when staying in this suite. Be sure to make time for a leisurely soak in the clawfoot tub.
The Gardener
The Gardener is inspired by late-19th century iron garden pavilions, seamlessly mixing interior and exterior elements for a lush, striking space. A wrought iron bed frame contrasts with soft textures and melange of Moroccan patterns on the bench and rugs, while floral art and sketches of feminine forms add evocative appeal.
The Architect Studio
Dark and modern, The Architect Studio was created with an architect’s living space in the ‘40s in mind. Grey, textured walls, mid-century modern furniture, and mahogany shelving filled with design books and vintage objects reflect a thoughtful approach to scale, light, and texture.
The Writer Suite
Finally, The Writer Suite is an inspiring space full of books and curiosities from around the world. A cosy bedroom with a deep red leather bed frame and art deco lamp leads through an arched wooden doorway into the library, where armchairs face a fireplace complete with marble, tile, and ornate wooden detailing. A vintage typewriter, too—should you feel compelled to start that novel.
If you ever leave your room (and we understand if you don’t), the Maker’s restaurant is found downstairs in a glass conservatory, full of towering Fiddle Leaf Figs and Elephant Ear plants for a lush, romantic feel. At the helm of the kitchen is executive chef Michael Poirkoff, offering a menu of seasonal dishes using ingredients from local farms and purveyors.
Settle into a tufted armchair for a dinner of fluke crudo, ricotta & lovage dumplings in mushroom broth, and duck breast with sourdough porridge. And be sure to save room for dessert; a delicate elderflower mousse is the perfect way to cap off the night.
